In 1968, the non-profit organization Dynamic Action Residence Enterprise – now Hopewell Inc – purchased the building at 36 Perkins Street. Historically and to this day, the building serves as a meeting place for the community to discuss ‘community based care’ – which emphasizes providing support within communities, rather than at far-off institutions. This originally manifested into MA’s first state funded community-based group home providing an alternative to institutionalization.  The ‘community based care’ movement soon spread throughout New England and later led to the origination of umbrella groups such as the Provider’s Council and The Caring Force.

Community Service Care managed group homes at 36 Perkins Street and other locations throughout New England until 2009, when the focus of the organization shifted to supporting students and young professionals working in the fields of social justice, conservation, and public health.  Concurrently, Community Service Care expanded the provision of programmatic and administrative support for a wide range of local groups that are aligned with the mission of the organization.
